Happy Thanksgiving, iRun Nation!

October 12th, 2009

Ahh, Thanksgiving.  This has to be one of my favourite holidays – all of the food of Christmas without the crazy trips to the mall.

While I try to live my life with gratitude every day, Thanksgiving also supplies a helpful reminder to reflect on all of the reasons I have to be thankful.  The list is extensive.  Maybe this is a predictable and oh-too-common type of post for Thanksgiving, but I would like to share a select few, running-related reasons I have to celebrate.

I am thankful that I am fortunate enough to run in Canada.

I am thankful for my non-runners.  It bears repeating: without the support of the important people in my life, this hobby of mine would not be nearly as accessible or enjoyable.

I am thankful for the ability to run.  I may not run fast, but I have the physical ability to go out, put one foot in front of the other, and reap the many benefits that brings.

I am thankful for the running community.  They don’t particularly care that I don’t run fast, and are supportive of anyone who makes the choice to be out there.  This includes all of the friends I have made over time at Running Mania and the Running Room forums.

I am thankful for technical fabric.  Sure, running is a simple sport, not requiring much (or some might say, any) equipment or facilities, but really, wicking fabric makes it so much more comfortable!  I am also thankful for good shoes, reflective gear, good sports bras, and Body Glide!

I am thankful for treadmills.  As much as I deride them, I am so glad to have the choice to run inside and watch TV in some circumstances!

I am thankful that I found running.  Whatever you want to call it:  hobby, passion, obsession, addiction – I am so glad that it’s a part of my life.

I am thankful for the runner’s high.  I know there is much controversy over whether or not it even exists, but it is my experience that it does, and that’s enough for me!

I am thankful for iRun and this chance to write to the iRun Nation!  I can’t even tell you how fortunate I feel to have this opportunity.

I am thankful for you!  To those who provide me with feedback, those who join the discussion through comments, and those who follow along quietly – thanks so much for reading!

With that, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a safe and very happy Thanksgiving!
