June iRun available now!

April 29th, 2009

I got my June 2009 iRun in the mail today and quickly turned to page 13 to see my name in print (woo hoo!).  When they asked me to choose a post to print I didn’t have to think very hard before I chose the one from March 7, 2009, Have you hugged your Non-Runner today? That one is very dear to my heart because I am so very grateful for the support I receive from my family and friends.

Another example of my Non-Runner support:

One Saturday morning last July, Tanya and I were out for a LSD that was supposed to be 26 km.  We apparently didn’t start out quite early enough, and I am not a big fan of extreme heat.  As the temperature climbed to 30 degrees plus a humidex of about a million, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to finish the run.  I won’t be all dramatic and tell you I had heat stroke, but I had to walk more than usual, and every time I tried to start running again, my heart rate shot up and I felt dizzy and sick (I think there were some pink elephants, but I wasn’t too concerned since they hadn’t started dancing).  We had made it just over 20 km when I told Tanya I would have to walk back; we were just left of the middle of nowhere and she very wisely wanted to call home for a pick-up.  Neither of us had a cell phone on us, and I wouldn’t let her knock on a door or flag down a car.  So we walked.  And walked.  I am telling you, we were less than 6 km from home, but it might as well have been 1000 because it seemed to take forever!

We finally made it back into town; we were probably 1 or 2 km from home when we spotted a convenience store.  The pay phone was broken, so the kind clerk let us use the store phone.  I called my husband and said, “we are at Macs.  Please pick us up, and bring money!”  As soon as I hung up, we poured ourselves giant Frosters.  He was so good about it – by rights he should have at least laughed his arse off at me, but all he did was grin, pay for the drinks and take us home.  Once I felt better he allowed himself to point and laugh, but at the time, he was very sympathetic.

(Mom, if you’re reading this, yes I now carry my phone on long runs.)
