Killing Time While Vicky Finishes PRE

VICKY: I was a bit surprised in the last blog post to hear you say that your half marathon was a nightmare.  Your time wasn’t that bad.

GRANT: It was a failure in so many ways.  So many errors of judgment.

VICKY: Like what?

GRANT: Well, the worst part about it was that I didn’t enjoy myself.  My biggest mistake came at the 5 kilometer mark.

VICKY: You looked good at that point.  You took off ahead of me.

GRANT: Yeah, shouldn’t have done that.  It wasn’t part of the plan.  My plan was to just run with you and have a fun time.  We were right in there with the 2:10 bunny and I was feeling great.  Too great.

VICKY: Oh oh.  So you shouldn’t have taken off?

GRANT: Yeah, big mistake.  Rule number one should be “Stick to the plan”.  I was feeling good, but I wasn’t in PB shape.  I was on track until about the 14K mark, then it went off track.  I didn’t have the fitness to sustain it.  I suffered and limped in a minute slower than a PB to add insult to injury.

VICKY: Well, no harm done though really.  You’re not actually injured.

GRANT: No, but I haven’t been feeling so hot for the last couple of months.  I have a groin pull and my lower back and hamstrings are tight.

VICKY: You have to stretch more.

GRANT: Yes, I’ve been going to yoga again recently.  Three times in the last week to Hot Yoga at my favorite local place.  I feel like my body is healing itself and loosening up.

VICKY: Buddy, that’s great news!

GRANT: Yes, it also allows me to repost a funny picture I made last year for the blog.

VICKY: That’s shameless.  An unnecessary plug for your yoga studio and reposting old cut and paste art work. Don’t you have anything better to do, like write about PRE?

GRANT: I would if you gave me a copy of my book back.

VICKY: Still working on it….at Chapter 3 :)

    I have twice now made the mistake of not testing something in training before using it in a run. The first time I got this hot idea to dilute powerade instead of the water I carry. It was a 10K and I had a side cramp from 2K to 8K. You’d think I would have learned from that but instead I wear a cute little running skirt for a half this past weekend – never worn before – major shafing on my inner thigh. I actually considered grabbing the vaseline on a stick until i pictured myself trying to apply the vaseline to the impacted area – running along with my hand up my skirt?! So, I’m really hoping the lesson will stick this time – PREtest before the run…(note the PRE plug there).
