Running with apps

Rev up your workout by training with the undead. Zombie chases and ghost races are just two exciting apps that’ll have you running for your life – in a good way!

Whether you want to pick up the pace, build endurance or even drop a few pounds, add apps to your run and go from inspiration to perspiration. From the fun and quirky to the seriously functional, here are a few of the best apps out there sure to jolt every running routine and track your vital stats.

Turn your workout into a race for survival with Zombies, Run! Hearts race and footsteps quicken as you run from zombies in a post-apocalyptic narration. This immersive running game takes you on an audio adventure while you pound it out on the pavement. As you complete kilometres you also “complete” tasks that will aid your band of refugees. Choose your own custom playlists before running and the story unfolds in between your tracks through a series of dynamic radio messages and voice recordings. Once you encounter a zombie mob you'll need to run faster until the sound of the shuffling undead behind you fades – or else! ($7.99) Android this Spring, iPhone

RunKeeper records your speed, pace and elevation for each run and then maps it all out for you. A favourite and one of the best known running apps out there, you won’t find many apps, especially free ones, more versatile and full of features than RunKeeper. It keeps your runs archived and you can upload data to runkeeper.com to track your progress over the seasons and share your newest running routes with your running mates. For treadmill warriors, don't worry, runs can also be entered manually. You can opt to receive audio feedback while running on whether you are ahead or behind your target pace or get coached through an interval workout for a little extra push. (Free) Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile

Stop running against the clock and start running against your toughest competitor – yourself! Ghost Race tracks your times on different routes and compares your performance from day to day. Monitor your progress with the archive whic comes complete with weather details at the time of your activity so you can track the effect of weather on your performance. The app's audio function keeps you updated on your progress against your previous time, giving you extra incentive to kick up those heels. ($0.99) Android, iPhone

If you're a jack of all trades, Endomondo Sports Tracker might be your best bet. Runners can track running, cycling and other sports – even kitesurfing! Get real-time GPS tracking of time, distance, speed and calories. Data is sent to your profile at endomondo.com, where you can analyze your training, compete against friends, follow them live and communicate with the community of 7.5 million active people throughout the world – regardless of the device they're using. Edomondo’s social networking side makes it more of a fitness partner than an app. Turn up the heat with the “Beat a Friend” option and compete against a friend's personal best. (Free) Android, Blackberry, iPhone, Windows Mobile

Go from lazy lump to pumped with 5K Runner. This fun app makes it easy for anyone to lace up their runners and hit the street or treadmill. With just 35 minutes of training, three times a week for eight weeks, 5K Runner will take you from zero to 5K hero. Alternating between walking and running to begin, the routines are preprogrammed, sync with your tunes and can post your success to Facebook or Twitter. Perfect for those who are just starting out but the motivational quotes might be a little corny for some. ($2.99) iPhone, iPod Touch

Turn your phone into a personal coach with miCoach. Using GPS and real-time voice coaching to pace you through workouts, miCoach collects your movement and cardio data during training or competition and helps you build a training plan specific to your sport and goals – this is probably your only chance to have NBA star Derrick Rose as your personal coach. Various add-ons can be bought in store including a heart monitor that allows real-time coaching feedback based on your heart rate during workout. (Free) Android, Blackberry, iPhone

Last, but not least, all iPhones come with Nike+ but require a shoe sensor to make the most of your run. Once you sync the sensor to your phone there is a parade of information including pace, calories and distance at your disposal – all that and you can tell your friends, challenge them and leave them in your dust through Nikeplus.com. Aside from tracking your activities and performance, you can also set goals and train smarter with customized workouts. ($25.00 for the sensor) iPhone, iPod Touch
