We asked the question: Where does it hurt?
Around the Bay 30k Road Race
Hamilton, Ontario March 30, 2008
Katherine D'Amico, St. Catharines, Ontario
How was the race?
It was great. This is probably my tenth time, maybe more, doing this race. I did 2:29, so I broke eight minutes per mile for the first time.
Where does it hurt?
Everywhere. I've got such a cramp in the bottom of my foot, it's killing me.
John Caulfeild, Mississauga, Ontario
How was the race?
It was a little chilly, but conditions were really good. I didn't quite meet my target but I'm happy that I'm upright and smiling.
Where does it hurt?
My quads are somewhere out at the 26k mark. I'll have to run back and look for them. But the heart's feeling good, so I can go home with pride.
Richard Kalendra, Etobicoke, Ontario
How was the race?
Never tried this distance before in my life. Man oh man, this was a fun show. Beautiful course, beautiful day. I didn't even feel the last 10 kilometres. I'm a happy camper.
Where does it hurt?
Let's see, these things are called quadriceps, these things are called my gastrocnemius. Ow!
David Van Klaveren, Toronto, Ontario
How was the race?
Within 10 seconds of my target time, so I'm thrilled. The hills were murder. I'm trying to qualify for Boston. This is the pace I need for my full marathon, so it's good.
Where does it hurt?
My hamstrings are a little tight, the sort of stuff you get when you start pushing at the end of the race. But generally I feel good.
Peter Evans, Windsor, Ontario
How was the race?
Great race. Five-minute PB. I hurt. I bonked really bad with 2k to go. The Reaper got me. But it felt great coming in.
Where does it hurt?
Everywhere. In Windsor, there are no hills, so we pay for it here.
Mary Homer, Hamilton, Ontario
How was the race?
It was my second time running it. I wanted to go under 2:15, but I went 2:18. It's a personal best, so I'm happy.
Where does it hurt?
The last 400 metres, I felt the lactic acid. And I have blisters. But other than that, I'm pretty good.
Sepanta Dorri, Toronto, Ontario
How was the race?
It was great. It was a little windy, but a beautiful day. And tremendous crowd support. It was a lot of fun. When I ran it last time, eight years ago, it didn't finish in the Coliseum. I really like that. It's a nice touch.
Where does it hurt?
It hurts a little bit in the back of the legs, but we'll do a nice little warm-down to take care of that.
Cameron Lutley, Toronto, Ontario
How was the race?
Great, I loved it. You could work up a sweat midway through the race, it was great.
Where does it hurt?
I'm all good. It's a short race. I'm used to running 100k or 100 miles. I'm not sore. I'll be running tomorrow morning. No big deal.
Glenna Fraumeni, Toronto, Ontario
How was the race?
It was the first big race back for the season. It feels good to get your legs working again and know you're still a runner.
Where does it hurt?
It doesn't. And my ego doesn't hurt. I feel good that I made my time. I was a little nervous.
