Terry's Legacy: Reflections on the greatest runner of all time

As Terry Fox's 50th birthday approaches in July, we asked Canadians to share their reflections on the greatest runner of all time and his lasting legacy. Perhaps you have reflections of your own you want to share — memories of the Marathon of Hope, or stories of how Terry's resilience continues to inspire you. Send us your tributes to Terry in roughly 50 words or less, and we'll post them on iRunNation.com.

"Terry´s values, determination, never-give-up attitude, big dreams and innovation are some of the greatest qualities that every Canadian should have. His run is also one of the few events around the world that brings Canadians abroad together."

Pierre Lafontaine
CEO and National Coach
Swimming Canada

"I think it´s wonderful how he inspired a whole generation of Canadians to be active and to be caring for others. The Marathon of Hope was for others."

Ian Murray
Nova Scotia Cross Country Ski Team

"Terry Fox was a huge role model for me. I remember following his journey closely through the media and was devastated when his cancer had returned. His passion and commitment to persevere is awe inspiring and something we can all learn from."

Carolyn Waldo
Olympic gold medalist

"No one comes close to even matching the impact Terry Fox has had on Canada and Canadians. His legacy has not only inspired millions through funding for the Canadian Cancer Society, but it has also spawned renewed intent in running and physical fitness. We know that good physical activity is one of the ingredients to help prevent cancer and Terry's Marathon is not only helping to find a cure for cancer, but also it is working to prevent this terrible disease."

Jim Watson, M.P.P
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing
Government of Ontario

"Terry Fox is truly a symbol of hope, courage and compassion to me and to many other Canadians. His Marathon of Hope united a country in a common vision and goal to find a cure for cancer. Many years have passed since Terry's death, but his legacy lives on every September with the annual Terry Fox Run held in communities throughout Canada and around the world. To me, Terry Fox is one of the greatest Canadians of all time."

Dan Mathieson
Mayor of Stratford
